The British Navy has handed over eight suspected Somali pirates to Kenyan police in Mombasa.

Kenyan Coast provincial police have confirmed the arrest.

About one week ago, the pirates were apprehended by crew members on the HMS Cumberland following a gunfight which left two pirates dead.

Police say the pirates will be taken to court on Wednesday.

The suspected pirates were taken aboard the HMS Cumberland after the British ship spotted a Yemeni fishing vessel, which it identified as earlier taking part in an attack on a Danish merchant vessel.
