BAGHDAD, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi government hailed on Wednesday the triumph of Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential election, government spokesman said.

The spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said in a statement that the Iraqi government "welcomes and respects the choice of the American people in electing Senator Barack Obama as the president of the United States."

Dabbagh also asserted on the "true desire of his government in cooperating with the elected president in a way that would achieve the common interests of the two peoples."

Earlier in the day, Iraq's Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari congratulated Obama his win describing the elections as "historic."

In an interview with Arabiyah television Zebari said he does not see any immediate change in the U.S. foreign policy toward Iraq with the new U.S. president.

"We don't foresee any change overnight or any change in the U.S. commitments toward Iraq," Zebari told the Dubai-based Arabiyah.

Zebari also hoped that Obama's victory would be an opportunity to establish a sort of "successful future partnership" between the two countries.

During his campaign, Obama said that he intends to get the American soldiers in Iraq home within 16 months after carrying the post of commander in chief.
