Pakistani PM congratulates Obama

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Wednesday congratulated the United States President-elect Senator Barack Obama in a letter.

"On behalf of the people and the government of Pakistan, and on my own behalf, I warmly congratulate you on your election as the 44th President of the United States," Gilani said in a letter to Obama.

Gilani also said he looked forward to more opportunities to discuss ways to further strengthen Pakistan-U.S. relations and to promote peace and stability in the region and beyond, according to the News Network International news agency.

"Your election marks a new chapter in the remarkable history of the United States," Gilani said, "For long, the ideas of democracy, liberty and freedom espoused by the United States has been source of inspiration for the millions around the world."

Gilani also sent a letter to Senator Biden, congratulating him on his election as the Vice President of the United States.

President Asif Ali Zardari, who is in Saudi Arabia on an official visit, also sent a message to Obama, congratulating his victory, Pakistan's state television reported.
