Obama to speak as president-elect on election night in Chicago

CHICAGO, United States, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, where Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was holding his election night rally, was being burnt in enthusiasm as the first-term senator had been projected as the next U.S. president on Tuesday night.

The park, crammed by almost a million people, was immersed in tides of cheering, applause and music of victory with some supporters breaking into tears at the news of Obama's successful bid for the White House.

The Illinois senator, who had been waiting for the results with his family and running mate, fellow senator Joe Biden, in a nearby hotel, was expected to appear soon before the massive rally and deliver a speech as a president-elected for the first time.

Footages shown in the big screens at the part showed people of Chicago as well as of other parts of the country were excited about the historical moment when the country elected its first African American president ever.

Obama was projected to win the presidential election by CNN around 10 p.m. Tuesday after he gained an unchallenged lead in a key swing state, Virginia, and collected at least 270 electoral votes which are needed to secure the presidency.
