Germany's benchmark DAX index was down 5 percent, while the French CAC-quarante fell by 3.5 percent, and Britain's FTSE 100 by 5.6 percent. Wall Street had another terrible day.
The Dow Jones industrials dropped more than 300 points, and all the major indexes fell by more than 4 percent.
Every major Asian regional benchmark also closed in the red. Japan's Nikkei Average and South Korea's KOSPI both slid around 10 percent.
