Russian FM visits Abkhazia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has paid his first official visit to Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia but recognized as an independent state by Moscow last month.

During talks with Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh in the regional capital, the top Russian diplomat pledged to sign inter-governmental agreements with Abkhazia, to show support to the independence of the Caucasus region.

Lavrov said the legal status of Russian troops deployed to the region will be enhanced in the next few days, and will be defined in their friendship, cooperation and interaction treaty.
