Competitors from across the globe began their quest for 160 gold medals up for grabs in the athletics events as competition began at the National Stadium, or Bird's Nest. Athletics include track, road and field events.

Wheel chair racing---a unique Paralympic event. The event was very competitive. The spectators enjoyed the intense atmosphere.

A chaotic crash affected the results of the women's 5,000 meter final. 6 racers were forced to withdraw. The rest of the pack had to negotiate their way around. The crowd even cheered loudly for the last racer.

US competitor Shirley Reilly came in fifth, but remained optimistic.

Shirley Reilly, Wheel Chair racer of USA said "It didn't turn out the best, I feel a bit disappointed. But there more races to come, so I will be prepared next time."

Shelly Woods finished second, and she says crashes are unavoidable in the sport.

Shelly Woods, Wheel chair racer of HK said "These girls will get back on the track and race again. These girls are tough as well. It's part of the racing, you compete and get the best, and are elite. We go there and train 6 days a week, in wind and rain, sometimes it snows, you know, we got and give our all competing and doing your best."

World records continue to be made, including Denmark's Jackie Christiansen who set a new shot put record.

Jackie Christiansen, Shot Put Gold Medalist of Denmark said "It's great an incredible stadium and it's a great feeling to win and beat the world record. You got to like the sport, you don't like it, you don't make it. I love it, and I'd like to train."
