Special Report:   Post-quake reconstruction

The massive May 12th earthquake damaged many roads and bridges in Sichuan province. That is making the transport of aid and reconstruction materials quite difficult in some quake-ravaged areas, especially for those living in remote mountainous areas. So PLA soldiers are pressing on with efforts to repair and rebuild damaged transportation infrastructure in the quake zone.

The Erlangcun Bridge and Quanshui Bridge serve as the only two paths linking the seven mountain villages in Anxian county to the outside world.

But the May 12th earthquake severely damaged both bridges, bringing road access to a halt.

After learning about the situation, PLA engineering troops began using steel plates to repair the damaged bridges.

But the construction work was challenging. The six steel plates required for the job weighed 20 tons. And the complicated geological situation made it difficult for large machinery to operate there. So soldiers had to finish the job with their bare hands.
