The earthquake has been devastating, but people around the world have shown great compassion. Emergency relief supplies from the US have arrived in some of the worst-hit areas. Water filtration systems have been installed to provide clean water for local victims.
The relief supplies donated by the US international relief organization Samaritan's Purse arrived in Shifang city on Sunday. They included sheets of heavy-duty plastic to be used to build close to 35 hundred temporary shelters.
Staff of Samaritan's Purse said, "We working now with local officials last for two years."
The supplies, valued at about 1 million US dollars, also include six water filtration systems. They will be sent to the three worst-hit towns of Shifang city and the other three to Mianzhu city. The massive quake has destroyed all the 48,044 water towers in Shifang. The basic water supplies in Luoshui town, about 30 kms away from Shifang, has also been damaged. Local people have to depend on disinfecting groundwater.
The water filtration system that arrived on Sunday afternoon will help 15,000 people get safe water. And the device can be installed quickly.
The plane carrying 90 metric tons of emergency goods departed from North Carolina on Saturday.
