Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has arrived in Jordan for talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman.

His visit came as news broke that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered his army to scale back operations in Gaza.

Abbas said the basics of a truce has been worked out and Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants were now seeking assurances they will not be targets of Israel.

A recent escalation in violence in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel has hampered U.S.-backed peace talks between Israel and the moderate Palestinian leadership of the West Bank.
