The Ministry of Construction announced on Tuesday that the total volume of energy-saving buildings in China's urban areas have topped 2 billion square meters by the end of last year. That accounts for nearly 12 percent of the total construction volume.

The ministry said up to last October, 97 percent of newly-built housing in the urban areas met the energy-saving standards. And more than 70 percent also complied with the standards during their construction stage.

The ministry said such initiatives helped the country save up to 5 million tons of standard coal during that period. What's more, the ministry says it will also upgrade the public heating system of up to 150 million square meters in North China to make it more environmentally friendly.
