Special Report:   Pakistan's Bhutto assassinated

Investigators from Britain's Scotland Yard are supporting Pakistani government findings that Benazir Bhutto was killed as a result of a suicide bombing. The party once led by the former prime minister has long claimed that Bhutto died instead from gunshots fired during the same attack.

A report released on Friday in Islamabad by British investigators says Bhutto suffered a massive injury on the right side of her head.

Extracts of the report were read out to the media by a Pakistani senior police official who is engaged in the murder investigation.

Abdul Majeed of Criminal Investigation Department said "The only tenable cause for the rapidly fatal head injury in this case is that it occurs as a result of impact due to the effects of bomb blast."

The report concluded there had been a single attacker. It said the man had fired shots at Bhutto from close range - but did not hit her - and had then blown himself up.

Despite the lack of a detailed search of the crime scene or an autopsy of Bhutto's body, the report insisted that the evidence gathered was sufficient for reliable conclusions.

Investigators relied considerably on X-rays and the detailed examination of videos of the attack.

Pakistani police have arrested two suspects in the killing based on information from a 15-year-old boy arrested last month.

The boy told police he was part of a five-man suicide squad charged with assassinating Bhutto.
