The gunmen stormed into the school near the town of Bannu after a chase and fire fight with police that killed a gunman and wounded a police officer.

After a five-hour standoff, the six gunmen gave themselves up. Negotiators say in return for releasing the captives and giving up their weapons the gunmen were set free.
