Special Report:   Mideast Peace Conference

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday that he will visit Israel next month to promote the Middle East peace process.

During a meeting in the White House to mark the Jewish festival Hanukkah, Bush confirmed reports that he will make his first visit to Israel since taking office in January.

Bush failed to mention whether he will visit the Palestinian territories or other countries.

The White House said on Dec. 4 that Bush would visit the Middle East early January to press the Israelis and Palestinians to restart stalled peace talks, but provided no details about the visit.

The United States hosted the Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland late last month to re-launch the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Representatives from nearly 50 countries and international organizations attended the conference.
