Musharraf defends emergency rule

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, says he declared a state of emergency to allow a stable political transition.

Pakistani state television quoted Musharraf as saying emergency rule was ordered in the best interest of the country.

Musharraf says he intends the state of emergency to ensure effective governance and help continue with rooting out terrorism. Musharraf insists he called the week-old emergency rule to help fight Islamic extremists who control territory near the Afghan border.
