Tens of thousands of Venezuelans have marched through the capital Caracas to express their support for the country's constitutional reforms which would expand President Hugo Chavez's power and allow him to run for re-election indefinitely.

Wearing the traditional red of Chavez's ruling party, the president's supporters are known as the "Chavistas". They chanted slogans in favor of the sixty-nine proposed amendments, in a procession that stretched for several kilometers.

Chavez won re-election last year on promises to transform Venezuela into a socialist state.

He says the changes would expand democracy by devolving power to neighborhood-based assemblies with administrative responsibilities usually reserved for elected officials. But opposition leaders warn some changes would violate civil liberties.

On Friday and Saturday, thousands of people turned out to demonstrate against the amendments in anti-Chavez rallies.
