Turkey has stepped up anti-rebel operations along its border with Iraq. Turkish warplanes and helicopter gunships have reportedly attacked positions of rebels from the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, just inside the country.
The Anatolia news agency said warplanes and helicopter gunships bombed positions of Kurdish rebels along the rugged Iraqi-Turkish border on Wednesday.
Turkey has moved troops to the border after warning Iraq and Western allies on Tuesday that an incursion is imminent unless Baghdad takes action.
The increased assaults come after a rebel ambush killed 12 Turkish soldiers near the border with Iraq on Sunday. Eight other soldiers are missing.
Turkey's leaders are facing growing demands at home to stage an offensive into northern Iraq, where PKK rebels rest, train and get supplies.
