Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has held an emergency meeting, after Kurdish rebels killed 17 Turkish soldiers in an ambush on Sunday. Erdogan has urged the US to take swift steps against PKK rebels in the Iraqi border region.

A statement by President Abdullah Gul's office says Turkey will do whatever it can to defeat terrorism. The statement did not mention a possible military response.
