Special Report: 17th CPC National CongressHu Jintao's keynote report to the 17th CPC National Congress also introduced some new and innovative policies on Taiwan and cross-strait relations.
The concept of economic development on the "west shore" of the Straits was brought up for the first time. These practical contents have been received and applauded enthusiastically by congress delegates.
China's southern Fujian Province is a hub for communication and exchange between the mainland and Taiwan. Investment from Taiwan is concentrated on the west shore of the Straits in Fujian. How to better take advantage of its fast-growing economy is a hot topic among discussions of congress delegates.
CPC Nat'l Congress delegate Huang Xiaojing said, "We sincerely hope that the mainland and Taiwan can realize the three direct links as soon as possible. We have already made thorough preparations on the opening of air, sea and road traffic."
CPC Nat'l Congress delegate Wang Sanyun said, "It's a crucial time to promote cross-strait exchanges."
The strategic thoughts of promoting economic growth on the west shore was first discussed in Fujian province three years ago. A series of preferential policies followed. Four Taiwan business investment zones, a cross-strait agricultural cooperation pilot zone and some smaller economic and trade zones were set up to benefit both sides of the straits. Delegates from Fujian say more policies will be introduced in the future, adding it's in the common goal of people from both sides of the Straits to improve the quality of their material and cultural lives.
