FM: Hu sets clear direction for China´s role in foreign affairs

On the sidelines of the ongoing 17th National Congress of the CPC, China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, also a congress delegate, spoke on the development of the country's foreign policy in recent years.

With reference to Hu Jintao's keynote report, Yang outlined the target and direction of China's future role in foreign affairs.

China's foreign policy: Past and future

Yang said, "In Hu Jintao's report, he profoundly analyzed the current international situation under the great transformation and restructuring. He emphasized that peace and development remain the major theme of the times and stressed that we should unswervingly stick to the path of peace and development, as well as adhere to a mutually beneficial strategic opening up policy. We must also pursue friendly cooperation with foreign countries based on the five fundamental principles of peaceful coexistence. I think this is a highly comprehensive and precise summary of China's foreign policy innovation and achievements in recent years, and has set out a clear direction for our work in the future."

Yang Jiechi on Taiwan issue

Yang Jiechi also elaborated on how to better communicate and cooperate with the international community to tackle secessionist activities in Taiwan.

Yang said, "The Taiwan authority has been promoting the so-called 'referendum' and 'Normal Country Resolution' in an attempt to split the island from China. The international community has strongly condemned their secessionist activities which aim at challenging our territorial integrity and jeopardizing the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations. On the UN General Assembly session, we've cracked down 15 times Taiwan's so-called participation in the United Nations. We'll never waver in our commitment to the one-China principle, never abandon our sincere efforts to achieve peaceful reunification. And we'll never allow anyone, by any means and forms, to separate Taiwan from the motherland."
