US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Cairo for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. She's seeking support from Egypt to bring Israelis and Palestinians closer together ahead of a Mideast peace conference set for November. In one of her strongest statements yet on the issue, Rice said the creation of a Palestinian state is a key US interest.
She also urged the two sides to drop contentious demands and reach consensus on a substantive joint statement ahead of the international conference. Before Rice's stop in Egypt, the country's Foreign Minister warned against rushing into the peace conference without first agreeing to a substantive and positive document that could lead to a just peace.
