Special Report: 17th CPC National CongressThe 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China opens in Beijing on Monday. At a preparatory meeting on Sunday, delegates appointed the secretary-general of the Congress.
On Sunday afternoon, CPC General Secretary Hu Jintao presided over the preparatory meeting at the Great Hall of the People. More than 2-thousand-2-hundred Party delegates attended the meeting.
The delegates chose Zeng Qinghong as secretary-general of the 17th National Congress of the CPC. 68-year-old Zeng Qinghong is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
The delegates also appointed a 237-member Presidium to oversee the congress. The delegates also agreed on the institutional structure and functions of the Secretariat of the Party Congress.
The CPC Constitution rules that the political bureau and its standing committee exercise the power of the CPC Central Committee when the central committee is not in session. The secretariat is the executive body of the political bureau and its standing committee.
