Road around mountain brings treasure

There's an ancient story of a man called Yugong, who decided to move a mountain named Tai-Hang, despite the skepticism of his fellow villagers.

Li Qiong introduces people to a modern Yugong, a CPC member -- who builds a road around a mountain, and brings treasures to local residents in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

Rulang County in Chongqing had its own Tai-hang Mountain to overcome. The mountain isolated more than 1,000 people, over 1,200 meters above sea level.

For many years, people had to climb the high mountain to leave the village. Since 1949, more than 20 people have fallen to their death. And until the late 1990s, villagers struggled without tap water and electricity.

Things changed, however, in 1999, when Village Party Secretary Liu Changfu led the villagers to find a way out.

Liu Changfu personally borrowed 100,000 yuan from local banks to build a road. His wife volunteered to cook for the workers. And this inspired other villagers to pitch in.

A Rulang county villager said, "We sold our livestock to support him."

A new 12-kilometer road opened in March 2000. Villagers could come and go easily. The link with the outside world changed their way of life.
