Japan and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea finished their first day of normalization talks on Wednesday in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator. Both sides gave positive signs that talks may yield progress.
The two delegations discussed key issues including Japan's reparation for its colonization of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, and the DPRK's abduction of Japanese citizens in the 1970s and 1980s. Though differences remained between the two sides during the talks, they reaffirmed that they will try to narrow the gaps.
The Japan-DPRK panel is the last of the five working groups set up under the six-party talks process, paving the way for a plenary session of the next round of six-party talks.
