The death toll from four apparently coordinated suicide car bombings near Iraq's northwestern town of Sinjar has risen dramatically to more than 250. In response, the United States has repeated its pledge to support Iraq in the fight against terrorism.
On Tuesday, four suicide car bombs ripped through Yazidi residential compounds near Sinjar. The attacks were apparently targeting residents from Iraq's Yazidi religious minority, who are primarily ethnic Kurds. On Wednesday, the US repeated its pledge to stand with the people of Iraq in their fight against terrorism.
Sean Mccormack, spokesman US State Department, said, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured. We stand with the Iraqi people in their fight against terrorism as they struggle to build a better way of life for themselves."
Tuesday's attacks recorded the deadliest incidents of its kind since the Iraq war broke out in 2003. But no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However,a US military spokesman said he believed it was the work of al-Qaida terrorists in Iraq.
