Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympics

With the one-year countdown to the Beijing Olympics just a few short days away we take a look at progress made in the construction of new buildings. Nor is this all for a one-odd event.

Experts are justifying the immense cost and effort they say the public will be able to enjoy new recreational sites long after the Olympics moves on from Beijing.

With just a year left to the 2008 Olympic Games, workers are putting finishing touches to landmark buildings in Beijing. Some 40 billion US dollars are being spent on constructing or renovating the city's 31 Olympic venues. Close to 400 million US dollars are being spent on the building of the national stadium alone, also known as the Bird's Nest.

The completed stadium will be able to hold just over 90-thousand spectators and will be used for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the finals of the soccer event, as well as other athletics events.
