Top leadership celebrates PLA´s 80th birthday

China's Defense Ministry has held a reception to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Liberation Army. Top leaders, including President Hu Jintao, NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and CPPCC Chairman Jia Qinglin, joined thousands of soldiers at the reception.
Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan toasted the whole army and expressed thanks to all related units and people for their long-term support. He also welcomed foreign diplomats partaking in the celebration.
Cao Gangchuan said since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the PLA has devoted itself to the country's economic construction, and its efforts are greatly appreciated by the central government, the Communist Party, and the people.
He called on the whole army to continue their efforts in improving living standards, safeguarding the country, pushing for peaceful development across the Taiwan Straits and seeking a peaceful reunification.
He said the army will not tolerate "Taiwan independence", nor allow anyone to separate Taiwan from the motherland. Cao also said the PLA will enhance exchanges and cooperation with other countries to maintain world peace based on mutual respect, mutual benefit and cooperation.
Finally Cao Gangchuan urged the whole army to implement the scientific development concept, promote national defense and improve army building.
