Relatives of S. Korean hostages welcome extended deadline

In Seoul, relatives of the 23 South Korean hostages have welcomed the extended deadline.

Meanwhile, activists held another candlelight vigil Monday night, demanding the immediate release of the captives.

The hostages have been given another 24 hours.

The anguish for the family members has been tempered by fresh hope.

Cha Sung-Min, hostage's brother, said, "The feeling we have right now is the same as yesterday and the same as the day before - we become very anxious as the deadline approaches. But because we've confirmed that there are reliable channels between the South Korean government and the Taliban, our feelings have become stable, and family members have more faith in the government to rescue the hostages."

On Monday, the Taliban extended the deadline to allow the South Korean government to open direct talks with the kidnappers.

The vigil is being kept in Seoul, where 200 activists demanded the safe return of the 23. The head of a civic social group, the Korea Socialist Party, offered his reflection on the anti-terror strategy.

Geum Min, head Korea Socialist Party, said, "To seize and kidnap civilians can not be justified. But on the other hand, the actions to extinguish terrorism have instead invited more terror. This has to be stopped."

Chanting slogans of "Safely back home, immediate withdrawal of troops", the demonstrators also called on the government to pull out troops from Iraq and Lebanon, as well as Afghanistan.
