7 bombs wound 9 in southern Thailand

Seven small bombs wounded at least nine people in the southern Thai city of Hai Yai on Sunday, in an attack similar to those carried out by Muslim separatists.

One of the wounded is in serious condition. Army-commander-in-chief General Sonthi Boonyraratglin declined to say immediately if separatists were responsible for the attacks, but said the bombs, all the size of soda cans, were aimed at causing chaos rather than major damage.

Muslim insurgents have hit several cities in the far south, with a series of small bombs.
