Special Report:   3rd Cross-Strait Forum

The first took place in Beijing and focused on economics and trade. The second focused on agricultural cooperation and was held in Boao in Hainan province. Here's a brief look at the two events, and how they helped expand links between the mainland and Taiwan.

The forums didn't come about easily.

In April 2005, top leaders of the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang Party from Taiwan shook hands for the first time in sixty years.

During their talks, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Jintao and then Kuomintang Chairman Lien Chan agreed to hold an economic and trade forum between the two parties.

The event was originally planned for Taipei. But obstacles put up by Taiwan authorities made the two parties relocate the forum to Beijing.
