China: "Taiwan independence" dressed up as health initiative doomed to fail

China says secessionist moves by Taiwan authorities, disguised as health initiatives, will not succeed.

Wednesday's statement was a response to Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's application for the island's membership in the World Health Organization.

The WHO is a specialized UN agency, whose membership is open only to sovereign states. The WHO's rejection of the application was in compliance with UN agency regulations.
