Fighting continues in Somalia, hundreds killed so far

Fighting between allied Somali-Ethiopian forces and Islamist gunmen has continued for a seventh day. Shelling and artillery shook the capital Mogadishu on Tuesday.

So far, hundreds of people have been killed. The interim government says the offensive will continue until the insurgency is wiped out. It has frustrated the government's attempt to restore central rule to the country for the first time in 16 years.

Terrified residents say neither side appeared to be gaining ground. This is the most sustained week of fighting in Mogadishu since the Somali-Ethiopian force defeated rival Islamists in a brief war over the New Year. It has killed about 300 people. Nearly half a million people have fled the seaside capital.
