Sino-Japanese joint press communique issued

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed on Wednesday that a lot has to be done in the course of building a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship.

During talks between the two, Wen said the long-term, healthy and stable development of China-Japan relations is not only conducive to the two close neighbors, but also to peace and development in the region and the whole world.

In building the strategic, mutually beneficial relationship, work has to be done in the following six aspects, Wen said.

First, the three political documents between the two countries should be abided by and political promises should be kept, so as to maintain the political foundation of bilateral ties.

Second, efforts should be made to increase high-level exchanges and dialogues and conduct timely contacts on major issues concerning bilateral relations so as to enhance mutual trust.

Third, mutually beneficial cooperation should be deepened through building a high-level economic dialogue mechanism, coordinating economic policies and cooperation goals and advancing cooperation in energy saving, environmental protection, financing, energy, information and high technology.

Fourth, strengthening military exchanges and defense and security dialogues. The two sides should brief each other promptly about major moves in military and security areas, and speed up the establishment of maritime crisis management mechanisms.

Fifth, enhancing cultural exchanges.

Sixth, consultation and coordination should be strengthened in regional and international affairs so as to play a constructive role in promoting regional cooperation and achieving long-term peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

For his part, Abe said that to build the strategic, mutually beneficial ties, the two sides should enhance mutual trust and maintain the exchanges of visits at the top and other levels. He also expressed the hope to visit China again within this year.

To mark the 35th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties, Japan will send a delegation of 20,000 people to visit China this year and welcome visits by Chinese delegations, he said.

He said it is of great significance for the two countries to build a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship in the security area. Neither side should view the other as a threat, and the two sides should strengthen security cooperation and set up liaison mechanisms between the defense bodies of the two countries. Japan welcomes visits by China's defense minister and Chinese naval vessels.
