Special Report:   2007 NPC & CPPCC

At the opening of the session, Chairman Jia Qinglin delivered a report on the work done by standing committee members over the past year. Let's take a look at the key points listed in the report.

Jia Qinglin says members of CPPCC standing committee received nearly 5-thousand proposals over the past year and referred them to the relevant government departments. They also handled more than 26-thousand letters and received 685 visits from members of the National Committee, celebrities and ordinary people. Jia says through this interactive work, the CPPCC played its role of democratic oversight and creating a bridge between the government and people.

China's top legislator says the standing committee members made visits to different regions to get a first-hand look at various social issues.

He says that altogether, 44 research reports and proposals on special topics were adopted by standing committee members. These include giving non-public enterprises equal market access and equal treatment, and making them more aware of their social responsibilities.

Two special conferences were held last year on implementing the strategy for large-scale development of the western region and on implementing the National Long and Medium-Term Program for Scientific and Technological Development.

Jia Qinglin says standing committee members also handled 201 proposals and over 34-hundred reports from central committees of the democratic parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce.

He says the standing committee strengthened unity and friendship with compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and emphasized opposition and containment of secessionist forces and their activities in Taiwan.

Jia says committee members expanded foreign contacts through 20 missions to 49 countries and by receiving 15 delegations from 12 countries and 2 international organizations. They also helped the international community

better understand China's resolve to pursue peaceful development and increase understanding of the country's political system.
