CPPCC begins annual session

The Fifth Session of the Tenth National Committee of the CPPCC began with top advisor Jia Qinglin delivering a report on the work of the CPPCC National Committee's Standing Committee over the past year. Then he outlined their plans for the year ahead.
More than 2,200 CPPCC National Committee members from throughout the country will discuss suggestions and proposals on China's political, economic, social and cultural affairs.
In a review of the past year's work of the standing committee, Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, Jia Qinglin says the body effectively strengthened the work of the CPPCC, and organized a plenary session of the national committee and meetings of the standing committee. He says this has contributed to the implementation of major policy decisions.

Jia Qinglin says the standing committee conducted effective research in economic, political and social development issues, especially those affecting the vital interests of the people. He says the research produced impressive results.
The standing committee also studied and researched a number of important theories, and expanded the role of democratic parties and people without party affiliation in the CPPCC.
Jia Qinglin notes the standing committee endeavored to strengthen unity and friendship with compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and with overseas Chinese nationals. The body has also vigorously expanded the CPPCC’s foreign contacts.
Looking at the year ahead, the top advisor talks of cooperation and unity to help further the country's interests.
Jia Qinglin said “We must uphold and improve the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC and consolidate and expand the broadest possible patriotic united front. We must focus on the central task of economic development, serve the overall interests of the country, keep the themes of unity and democracy firmly in mind, and conscientiously perform our functions of political consultation, democratic oversight and participation in the deliberation and administration of state affairs.”
The chairman pledges the standing committee will ensure the CPPCC continues to play its role in the political activity of the state. Jia Qinglin says they will promote development of the national economy, rally all social forces to contribute to the building of a harmonious socialist society, support the development of socialist culture, and continue to play a positive role in China’s diplomatic arena.
Huang Mengfu, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, then reported on how suggestions and proposals from CPPCC members were handled after the previous session.
The CPPCC session will last 12 days.
