Official figures released on Wednesday confirms that China's energy consumption fell in 2006, but still failed to meet the projected target. Per 10 thousand yuan, or 13 hundred US dollars, the GDP fell by 1.23 percent last year to 1.21 tons of coal equivalent.
This is the first time the National Bureau of Statistics has released figures on China's energy consumption per unit GDP. The Chinese government set an annual goal to reduce energy consumption per unit GDP by 4 percent.
According to preliminary estimates from the bureau, China consumed a total of 2.46 billion tons of coal equivalent in 2006.
