Ahead of the eve of the Chinese New Year, top leaders have gathered at the capital's Great Hall of the People for an early celebration. As we find out now, they were joined by four thousand people from across the country.

President Hu Jintao chaired the gathering of personages from various circles, and conveyed festival greetings to all the Chinese people.

Hu Jintao sent his regards to overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. And Hu Jintao thanked friends around the world on behalf of the CPC Central committee and the State Council.

Premier Wen Jiabao reviewed the nation's achievements during the year, saying China has made progress towards building an affluent socialist society. And Wen said the economy maintained a steady and relatively fast growth as part of China's modernization drive.

Premier Wen called for strengthened economic, political and cultural construction and the development of a harmonious society. And he called for efforts to create good conditions for the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party.

Wen said the essential mission of Chinese socialism and modernized construction is to emancipate and develop productive forces, and fulfill the material and cultural demands of the people. In the coming year, Wen said the Party and government will speed up efforts to handle the interests of various sides, protect the rights and interests of honest workers and legal business. Premier Wen said the government seek to maintain social equality, and strive to improve the working and living conditions of people in difficulty.

Wen Jiabao called on the nation to work hard and take advantage of the sound momentum of development to make new progress in China's modernization drive. He said the Chinese people will join with those from the rest of the international community to work for a peaceful and harmonious world.
