Special Report:   2007 Spring Festival

This year's first chartered direct flight to Taiwan has taken off from Beijing International airport. The Air China carrier has been specially named as Fuwa, the mascot of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Passengers taking flight Fuwa back to Taiwan for the traditional Spring Festival, queued well before 7 o'clock this morning to check in for the nine o'clock flight. Although having lived on the mainland for several years, for many passengers, this is their first direct flight back to Taiwan.

Taiwan passenger said, "last year, I just couldn't get a ticket"

Taiwan passenger said, "This is my first direct flight. It's convenient when travelling around this time of year. We would be happier if there were more."

The sixteen direct flights from Beijing to Taiwan this year are operated by Air China, the largest airline on the mainland. Aircraft have been painted with the five lovely mascots named Fuwa, representing the Olympic Games.

Airline ground staff playacted as the Fuwa characters at the boarding gate to welcome aboard the Taiwan passengers.
