Special Report: 2008 Beijing OlympicsBeijing's municipal government has declared the 11th day of every month "Polite Queuing Day".
The 11th was picked because the two numbers, 1 and 1, resemble two people lining up.
Under the slogans "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New Attitudes" and "I Join, I Contribute, I Enjoy," Beijing launched "Polite Queuing day" on Sunday.
At the launch ceremony, people queued to sign a volunteers card.
Pan Chunming, tourist, said, "Many foreigners will come for the Olympics. They'll get a good impression of the Chinese if we are polite."
A Beijing resident says polite queuing is necessary.
Zhang Jing, Beijing resident, said, "China is a country with great civilization but we still need to improve our manners and behavior. I believe there is still room for improvement."
In addition to the polite queuing campaign, the government has called on people to improve the city's image.
These include refraining from using vulgar words, keeping streets clean, observing courtesy rules at sport venues and treating others well.
