Special Report: Giant PandaBeijing will continue trying to persuade the Taiwan authorities to accept two giant pandas. The pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, were selected and offered as gifts last year to Taiwan.
The pandas are over two years old. They are healthy and living in a research center in Wo Long, in southwest China's Sichuan province. Doctors warn that the older the Pandas become, the more difficult it is for them to adapt to a new environment.
Taiwan Affairs Office Spokesman, Yang Yi, says Beijing hopes the Taiwan authorities will accept the pandas at the earliest possible date. Yang says the pandas are a symbol of friendship between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. He said Taiwan compatriots, especially children, are looking forward to receiving the Pandas.
