Bush signs India nuclear law

In marked contrast to US policy on the DPRK and Iran, President George W. Bush has signed into law a nuclear deal with India. The new law is a major step toward allowing India to buy U.S. reactors and fuel for the first time in 30 years.

The White House had pushed for the legislation to expand ties with India and increase trade for American companies.

Bush said the United States and India were natural partners, and America looked India as an important ally in the war against extremists and radicals.

"The relationship between the United States and India has never been more vital -- and this bill will help us meet the energy and security challenges of the 21st century." Said Bush.

Under the deal, the U.S. President would be required to end the export of nuclear materials if India tests nuclear devices. Indian prime minister said he would not compromise his country's sovereignty on nuclear research or relations with Iran.

India has agreed to allow international inspections at 14 civilian nuclear plants. Military facilities would still be off-limits.

The deal still needs the approval of major international nuclear organizations, and again by the U.S. Congress before nuclear transfers can actually take place.
