Annan : Iraq is close to civil war

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan says Iraq is close to civil war, citing the urgent need for preventative measures.

On Monday, reporters asked Annan if Iraq had already reached a state of war. He replied that the country's deteriorating situation means civil war is a very real possibility unless something is done immediately. He added that, even now, Iraq can be said to be on the brink of war.

Sectarian violence in Iraq is at its worst since a US-led invasion three years ago ousted former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein.
