Shanxi coal mine blast kills 17

Seventeen miners have been confirmed dead and another 30 trapped in a gas explosion at a coal mine in North China's Shanxi Province.

Initial investigation into Sunday's accident suggests that gas accumulated and exploded after exhaust fans stopped working due to a power failure. Senior officials from the General Administration of Work Safety and the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety Supervision as well as the Shanxi provincial government are now at the site to supervise rescue operations.
