Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

Though the Iraqi high tribunal has sentenced to the former president to death, it doesn't mean the end of the case. Analysts say it's still possible for Saddam to live out his days in prison.

According to Iraqi law, Saddam has 30 days to appeal the verdict. The case would be reviewed by a nine-judge panel, without time limit, which could drag the proceeding out for years.

And if Saddam's appeal is rejected, the death sentence should be signed by the Presidency Council of Iraq to go ahead.

President Jalal Talabani has gone on record opposing the death penalty in Saddam's case. And so far neither of the two vice-presidents on the council has shown willingness to give the green light.

But if Okayed by the council, Saddam will be executed within 30 days.

Some analysts fear the death verdict might deepen rift between Sunnis and Shiites in the war-torn country. That could push the final verdict months or years away.

It could very well be that letting Saddam live out his life behind bars is an option the judges are considering.
