Iraqi deputy PM asks coalition to stay

Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister says the volatile situation in the country needs continued help from the international community. Speaking after talks in London, Barham Saleh said he wants international forces to stay in the country. He's insisting that now is not the time to panic, despite a fast-deteriorating security situation.

Saleh was in London meeting with British Prime Minster Tony Blair.

He expressed concern about what he described as the increasing acrimony in the debate being held about Iraq in the United States and Europe.

Barham Saleh, Iraqi deputy Prime Minister said, “I believe the international community has no option of leaving Iraqis to face these difficult challenges on their own. Iraqi government wants to convince the international community that it is serious about assuming these responsibilities.”

The talks at No.10 Downing Street come after defense officials and a senior British minister claimed the Iraqi police and army could be given complete authority over Iraq's south within 12 months.

Prime Minister Blair's office denied that he would press Saleh to draw up an exit timetable for British troops, but acknowledged the talks were focused on a handover of power when it becomes possible.

Saleh said that he hoped half of the Iraqi provinces would be under Iraqi command by the end of the year.
