President Hu Jintao says the government is committed to fighting corruption and will cooperate with other countries to stop it happening. He was speaking at a meeting in Beijing of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities.

Strong determination is evident at the conference. Addressing the participants, President Hu Jintao pledged to root out corruption and build a clean government.

Hu said, “It is the consistent stance of the Chinese government to resolutely fight corruption and work actively to prevent it from happening. The fight against corruption has great influence on the overall development of the country. And this task is in the fundamental interests of the people, in the service of social equality, harmony and stability.”

Since last year, the Chinese government has sacked more than ten thousand officials on charges of corruption. In the latest high profile moves, the investigation in Shanghai has brought down the city's party chief and a dozen high-ranking officials. The president said deepening international cooperation would assist China's anti-corruption efforts.
