Russia, ROK call for co-op on DPRK nuclear issue

MOSCOW, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and his South Korean counterpart Roh Moo-hyun on Monday called for international coordination in resolving the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The two leaders discussed the situation in Northeast Asia following the nuclear test conducted by the DPRK, the Kremlin said in a statement issued after they had a telephone conversation.

"Both sides stressed the need for coordinated efforts by the international community to stabilize the situation and noted that the recently adopted UN Security Council resolution provides a basis for resolving the situation by peaceful, political means with all sides carrying out a balanced policy," the statement said.

The UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution imposing sanctions on the DPRK for its recent nuclear test.

The resolution also welcomes and encourages further efforts by all states concerned to intensify their diplomatic efforts, refrain from any actions that might aggravate tension and to facilitate the early resumption of the six-party talks.

Earlier in the day, Russia called for "a proper response" from the DPRK to the collective position of the international community stated in the resolution, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
