Meanwhile, the United States says it has suspended nearly 24 US dollars million in aid to Thailand because of its military coup. The US State Department said the action was taken in accordance with US laws restricting aid to countries that undergo military coups. (TAKEVIDEO) A State Department spokesman said the US will reinstate the programs after a democratically elected Thai government takes office. The suspended funds affect more than 16 million US dollars in counterterrorism and other training for the Thai military, 3.2 million US dollars in peacekeeping training, and 4 million for Thai arms purchases.
The spokesman went on to say that the US will continue its funding to Thailand for anti-terrorism programs, combating weapons of mass destruction and humanitarian purposes such as the fight against HIV/AIDS. The funding totals at least 9.7 million US dollars.
