UNICEF aims to help schools reopen

cctv.com 01-15-2005 10:41

The U-N says getting children back to school is one of its top priorities. UNICEF says returning to the classroom will help restore some sense of normality for families who survived last month's disaster.

Giant waves destroyed thousands of schools, killing and injured thousands of teachers in hard-hit areas. The governments of Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia are planning to reopen schools by January 26. In Sri Lanka, almost 250 school buildings are being used as temporary shelters for those made homeless. UNICEF has also been assisting the Indonesia with recruiting and training 2,000 new teachers. The Agency reports that earlier concerns of child trafficking haven't proved significant. But, as a precaution, Jakarta has placed a moratorium on adoptions in Aceh.
