Hu Jintao holds talks with Shroeder

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and top legislator Wu Bangguo in Beijing. Schroeder and Hu discussed ways to improve cooperation, especially in the northeastern regions of China.

Gerhard Schroeder is now in Changchun, in Northeast China's Jilin province. The city is part of China's old industrial center that the government is trying to rejuvenate. Chancellor Schroeder and his 43-strong delegation came to China with a clear goal, business.

Schroeder told President Hu Jintao that Germany is willing to expand cooperation with China - including interest in the northeast provinces in accordance with the Chinese northeast-development plan.

Hu Jintao thanked Germany for its contribution to the development of a strategic partnership between China and Germany and with Europe.


Also on Tuesday, Schroeder met with top legislator Wu Bangguo. Wu said increased communication between legislatures of the two countries has produced useful results. He said cooperation had increased mutual understanding. Schroeder said Germany is willing to increase non-governmental, cultural and other communication with China.

Schroeder is on a three-day official visit to China.
